Latvia's national dress is an integral part of the country's heritage. If you have ever seen a Latvian folk costume, you cannot have failed to notice that more attention was paid to beauty than practicality. Even today, the elegance and grace radiating from both the wearer and the garment are palpable. As with Hungarian folk customs, contrasting traditions developed in each Latvian region, so the country's dress also varies by geographical area and age group. Today, items of national folk dress have become valued museum pieces, but Latvians also enjoy returning to original designs to reinforce their national identity: During nationwide Song and Dance Festivals, national costumes are worn by singers, dancers and audience members alike. Another special occasion when folk dress is worn is the celebration of the summer solstice (Jāni), which most Latvians spend close to their families and nature. Contemporary fashion designers also try to incorporate traditional elements into their creations. You might see various folk patterns, including the Lielvārde Sash, on T-shirts, scarves, braided bracelets, belts, neckties, handbags and numerous other items. As the legendary Latvian poet Jānis Rainis (1865-1929) once said, "Only that which changes will last”.
