The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD 2023/24

The 2023/24 season at New York’s Metropolitan Opera promises to be even more diverse than usual, a fact that is faithfully reflected in this year’s programme of Met HD Live broadcasts. This means that the American opera house’s global audience can look forward to a total of nine performances in a series offering no fewer than five brand-new productions, including the premieres of three operas that have never been staged at the Met before. Eternally popular core works and exciting contemporary discoveries – each of them presented in a lavish production featuring some of the most celebrated singers of our time.

The 17th season of the Met HD Live series, which Müpa Budapest has presented each year since 2008 in both the Festival Theatre and the Auditorium, kicks off with three contemporary premieres. The first of these is Jake Heggie’s opera Dead Man Walking, a work that has also been presented in Budapest with great success, to be followed by X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X by Anthony Davis, and then Daniel Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas, which will be the first work to ever be sung in Spanish on the Metropolitan Opera stage. In addition to the contemporary premieres starring the likes of Joyce DiDonato and Ailyn Pérez in the leading roles, viewers will also get to see new productions of Carmen and La forza del destino, with Piotr Beczała appearing as Don José in the former and Lise Davidsen as Leonora in Verdi’s opera. The revivals on the calendar also promise casts that are just as strong, with Ukrainian Met favourite Liudmyla Monastyrska singing Abigail in Nabucco, for example, while Nadine Sierra and Benjamin Bernheim will take on the title roles in Roméo et Juliette. Finally, the season’s unmissable Puccini selections offer both a hit production and an unusual one, with new star tenor Jonathan Tetelman tackling the male leads in both Anthony Minghella’s now-classic staging of Madama Butterfly and the seldom-performed La Rondine, alongside the wonderful Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian and the magical Angel Blue, respectively.
