'In ancient cultures, drums and other percussion instruments enabled the shaman to journey to an altered state of consciousness between the physical world and the world of the spirits.” (Michael Drake)
Since the beginning, the band Žagar, led by Balázs Zságer, have walked their own uncompromising path, creating an inspiring and uplifting world for their fans. They have played a starring role on the Hungarian electronic musical scene, and every one of their concerts offers something new. On their new record, nature and metaphysics play a prominent role. The choice of topics are even more surreal than ever: Indian diableros, tropical rituals, singing mushrooms and raving tigers. All done with the help of African and South American rhythms and the meditative spirituality of the music of the East. They have appeared on stage alongside artists including Lőrinc Barabás, Fatima Gozlán, Ibro Fall and Márton Bakai. Their instrumentation now includes a number of new and fascinating instruments, including the Arab darbuka and djemba, the Persian ney and the African balafon. As always, of course, there will be a big focus on the visuals.
After their debut album Local Broadcast and the film score for the movie Szezon, Žagar achieved notable popular success after the Wings of Love. Their album Light Leaks was well received on numerous international blogs and their songs have been played on several British radio stations, including on the BBC. The group have been on several European tours and have also played as a warm up act for Depeche Mode. You can hear their music in countless films and TV series, including CSI Crime Scene Investigations.
