For a quarter of a century, Szilvia Bognár has been one of the most popular singers on the Hungarian folk and world music scene, one who is known for her work as a soloist in countless noted productions. This includes her work with Anima Sound System, Makám, the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, Ferenc Kiss and the Etnophone Music Association, the Nikola Parov Quartet, the Sebő Ensemble and on the albums Szájról szájra ('Mouth to Mouth') and Andrea Rost's Pannon dalok ('Pannonian Songs'). Her solo albums, running the gamut from vocal genres from the Renaissance to children's songs and progressive world music, are powerful proof of her versatility.
The world music-performing Szilvia Bognár Sextet, her most recent line-up, which she assembled together with her husband, made its début in 2017 and includes Hungarian, Gypsy, Bulgarian and Greek songs in its repertoire, none of them arranged or set in a fashion that could be considered the least bit standard. Their programmes are an encounter between the sheer variety of the genres of folk music, jazz and the classical music of northern India, offering a unique experience that no one else in Hungary can offer the audience. Together with an acoustic guitarist, a double bassist, a saxophonist and two percussionists, Bognár preserves the essentially acoustic sound and the naturalness of the traditional approach to performing them as she confidently rows out into the diverse current of diverging musical styles and traditional tunes. At their Winter Open Air concert, it is naturally Advent songs that they will be performing in order to delight their listeners in this joyful time of anticipation before Christmas.
