Mihály Borbély was the first in the Hungarian jazz world to place the work of not just Béla Bartók, but also Zoltán Kodály, in a new, improvisational context. His album Hommage à Kodály, which appeared in 2009, is a personal testimony to the music of Kodály, the timeless beauty of folk music and the power that it continues to exert to this day; even since the record was made, he has been continuously engaged in creating a modern interpretation of Kodály's legacy. On this occasion, he'll be playing with his regular trio, Polygon, composed of musicians whose broad-mindedness resembles his own: Miklós Lukács, who regularly performs works for cimbalom composed by Péter Eötvös and others, and András Dés, who is primarily a jazz artist but is also skilled in folk and electronic music.
One of their guests will be the world-renowned Swedish double bassist Dan Berglund, the motor behind the Esbjörn Svensson Trio, that innovator of piano trio playing which has boasted an enormous fanbase even since the death of its leader. Berglund is an ideal addition to Borbély and company as he is profoundly engaged with the music of his own nation. Also joining them at the concert will be Ági Szalóki: well-versed in numerous genres, able to sing in 11 languages besides Hungarian, and known for her charitable activities aimed at helping children, the singer looks to Márta Sebestyén, Mihály Dresch and Béla Szakcsi Lakatos as her role models.
