In Yamas and Niyama, the first two members of the eight branches of yoga, Patanjali summarised the fundamental rules of a 'yoga existence, before then outlining the subsequent modes of behaviour and thought. This system, which consists of two sets of five points, bears many similarities to the founding principles of other cultures and religious schools. In Foundations, Kornél Fekete-Kovács's newest full-length orchestral piece, these ten points are represented in ten musical movements. Over the past 13 years, the Modern Art Orchestra, who will perform this evening under the artistic direction of the composer Kornél Fekete-Kovács, have become one of the most important groups on the Hungarian jazz scene. The band like to see themselves as an 'experimental workshop', and are capable of playing concerts and recording albums that are equally at home in the realms of contemporary classical music and jazz. Not only have they been joined by such renowned musicians as Tom Harrell, David Liebman, Bob Mintzer, Rhoda Scott, Adam Nussbaum and Ennio Morricone, they have also invited talented young Hungarian creators to present their own compositions at their concerts.
The big band will have some outstanding accompaniment with a list of superb guest musicians who would appear to come from rather different directions. Percussionist András Dés and guitarist Márton Fenyvesi also play alongside Kornél Fekete-Kovács in the electronic improvisational band Effected. This evening the group will perform their meditative, difficult-to-define music that flits effortlessly between different genres. As special guests for this special themed concert we will enjoy Veronika Harcsa, and the Kossuth Prize-winning pianist, Béla Szakcsi Lakatos.
