There is a canard that the violin is not a true jazz instrument, that it is much better suited to folk music or the classical repertoire. This mistaken belief, however, would be vigorously disputed by anyone who has heard the playing of Luca Kézdy, the leading violinist of the generation of Hungarian jazz musicians currently in their prime. This is because she knows precisely how brilliantly her instrument can integrate into practically any genre, provided that it is handled appropriately.

And she's good at doing it, too: since making it to the finals of Hungarian Radio's 2006 jazz violin competition, where she also took the audience prize, Kézdy has honed her skills across quite a diverse range of styles playing in groups like the German-Hungarian experimental HundD Link Projekt, Nigun and the Free Style Chamber Orchestra. It's through her own ensembles, however, that she has realised her most personal musical ideas, principally as part of Santa Diver, which she established with her bass-guitarist husband, Dávid Szesztay, and in the duo Sequence, her partnership with percussionist Péter Szendőfi.
With a slew of successful festival shows both in Hungary and abroad under her belt, Luca is now bringing various different line-ups to Müpa Budapest. Aside from her regular collaborators, she has invited guitarist Mihály Gotthárt - or simply "Mike”, as he is known - from the band Ocho Macho, along with former Ektar and Rubái Trió singer Evelin Tóth, who has recorded albums with Hamid Drake and Orsolya Karafiáth (and who, like Kézdy, started out studying philosophy), and alto and soprano sax virtuoso Stefano di Battista, an outstanding figure from the Italian jazz scene who has released a dozen of his own albums so far. And as the music plays, the backdrop will fill with photos of the violinist, like reverberations of the same soul summoned from a different dimension.
