Flamenco evolved in the 16th century as an amalgamation of the musical traditions of Gypsies, Muslim Arabs and Spanish Jews fleeing the forced conversions of the Inquisition. Across the centuries that followed, it was kept alive by the Gypsies who lived at society's fringes, only entering the public eye in the mid-1900s. Primarily performed in cafés, true flamenco was nevertheless never background music, but rather a catharsis of explosive passion shared between the performer and the listener. In the second half of the 20th century, influenced by trends in popular music that gained currency Spain as they did elsewhere, flamenco took on new characteristics. Bearing mention among those who revolutionised the genre are Camarón de la Isla and Paco de Lucía, who opened it up to rock and jazz.
Born in 1982, Eduardo Trassierra is the kind of flamenco guitarist who plays fusion flamenco just as convincingly as he does the traditional variety. He received his first lessons from his guitarist father, José Trassierra, and was only 12 years old when he was awarded first prize - as a flamenco guitarist - at the conservatory. Since then, he has achieved everything that a flamenco guitarist could possibly dream of achieving, including winning the Niño Ricardo, Giraldillo al Toque and Juan Carmona Habichuela awards.
He is visiting Müpa Budapest with the other members of his trio: guitarist Pablo Pradas and drummer Andrej Vujicic. Although deeply rooted in the flamenco tradition, their music will provide an even more lasting experience for those who are open to Trassierra's jazzy fusion style.
