There are a lot of action films around. We get a kick out of them even if the main character comes out with no more than a dozen lines throughout the whole thing. And then there are those chatty films where more words flow than blood. Some of these can also be pretty exciting, mind you, like the films of Godard, Woody Allen, Károly Makk, Roman Polanski and Zoltán Fábri. Because from the words come tragedy and comedy, secrets and repression, suffering, sufferers and moral dilemmas. When it comes to the work of Eric Rohmer, the director of The Green Ray, it is pretty damn hard to say how all this idle chatter manages to affect us. Yet it does affect us, without a doubt. Rohmer has amassed a whole heap of prizes, but it is at least as important to know that his films are loved by the general public too. Heaven only knows how they can be so light and so heart-breaking at the same time. You don't need to read volumes of criticisms on Rohmer's work. His films take their hold on you in the darkness of the cinema. You have to see them and to hear them.
