Interrogation is a film with a turbulent fate. Although its director, Ryszard Bugajski, started shooting in late 1981 and completed the work in 1982, it was banned by the censor, and Eastern Bloc audiences only got to watch it in 1989, after the Iron Curtain had been sent to the scrap heap. This is the final example of the aforementioned cinematic movement known as ‘moral anxiety'. Interrogation takes us back to the Stalinist period, with a young actress being falsely imprisoned and subjected to every possible form of force by the authorities. Harsh fare that brings a lump to the throat, but why was it banned? At the end of the film, perhaps we'll understand what it is that links 1948 to 1982. One doesn't need to be a seasoned political scientist to see that where there's tyranny, there's tyranny.

This series has been made possible with the cooperation of the Polish Institute in Budapest.
