Silence is always more perfect than music. We have to learn how to hear. (Arvo Pärt)
In 2010, Arvo Pärt, one of the world's most frequently performed contemporary composers, returned to his native Estonia, where he was born in 1935, after living abroad for many years. He is one of those artists whose creative output has significantly changed the way we understand the nature of music. With his unique tintinnabuli compositions, he created a new musical paradigm and ushered in a new approach to composition that he still employs to this day. Although he inspired no school to follow him, and is himself not involved in education, his influence is clearly discernible in many musical works from the second half of the 20th century. This collection provides a look through the many turning points in the composer's life, from his childhood to the present day, as well as offering a guide to understanding his rich oeuvre.
This exhibition of the Estonian Theatre and Music Museum is part of a programme series celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Estonia; this display in Hungary is organised and comissioned by the Estonian Institute. The exhibition is being curated by Kriso Matson and Marge Raun.
