"Imagine a menu in a little restaurant in the Hungarian Plains, where in the old days, 30 years ago or so, you could see this: Meat soup; and now you can see this: Rich meat soup” - thus László Krasznahorkai concisely summarised the situation in a recent interview. Well, the path of this writer in the past 30 years has taken a different dynamic to that of the restaurant in the Plains: from the spectacular explosion of Satantango in 1985 to world star and winner of the Man Booker Prize in 2015, seemingly on an endless upwards curve. His novels have received recognition all over the world, from the United States to Japan and winner of several prestigious literary prizes in Germany. Susan Sontag appointed Krasznahorkai "The Gogol and Melville-quoting Hungarian master of the apocalypse”, while with Tarr Bélá he has adapted several of his books for films including Satantango, Werckmeister Harmonies and finally The Turin Horse, which gained worldwide release and won numerous international awards. Since 1990 he has lived on and off in France, Spain, the US, England, Holland, Italy and Greece. He is a writer with an unmistakeable voice, spitting out instantly recognisable, poetically-natured sentences and captivating the reader: enchanting and irresistible. That this independent creative force will be seen and heard on the Müpa Budapest stage is a reason for celebration and a truly special, rare event. The programme will be based on the novel Baron Wenckheim's Homecoming and directed by the author himself, while incorporating the works of Johann Sebastian Bach.
