----------------
Widely used in Balkan folk music, the kaval is a folk instrument of Persian origin that was relayed to the Balkan peninsula and Bulgaria by the Arabs. Its name is of Turkish origin. Made out of wood, the kaval is a long pipe that can be separated into three parts. The rim is on the top section and is generally made of bone or hardwood and richly decorated. The middle third is where the kaval player changes the notes by covering eight holes. The lower third contains four holes that are not covered: kavalists call these the 'devil's holes'.
This series is produced in partnership with the Ethnosound world music instrument shop.
