Ruggero Leoncavallo wrote Pagliacci in 1890, for the competition in which Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana took the top prize. Nevertheless, the company sponsoring the contest embraced this work as well, presenting it two years later under the baton of Arturo Toscanini. The piece, which takes place in Southern Italy, is a story of jealousy and a murder of passion. Portraying the main character in the opera will be José Cura, who this season was named the first regular guest artist of the Hungarian Radio Art Groups.

Cura's achievements as a singer and actor often puzzle critics. This, however, is a pleasant sort of puzzlement, as they generally realise that they are unable to say what the performer is actually doing on stage, as it is not him they see, but rather the character he is portraying, whether it is Otello, Calaf or, as the case may be, Canio. Although his singing is always precise, adhering to what is written in the score, every word that comes out of his mouth seems like an address or an expression of a spiritual state. It is not only the viewers who are impacted at an elemental level by the evocativeness of his artistic presence: his fellow singers in the cast can always count on Cura making the stage around him sizzle.
