The 27-year-old Jazzmeia Horn's name also describes what she is all about. The winner of both the 2015 Thelonious Monk and the 2013 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Competitions has already surpassed her initial status as a talented young discovery, developing into a remarkable, internationally renowned figure of the New York jazz scene. Her band, The Artistry of Jazz Horn, which often features poets and dancers alongside the musicians, plays with incredible dynamism and has appeared alongside Horn at some of the most renowned jazz clubs and festivals in the world.
The singer, who has Nubian roots, was born in Dallas before moving to New York in 2009 to begin a solo career. She soon found herself playing with musicians such as Junior Mance, Billy Harper, Ellis Marsalis and Frank Wess. Horn performs personalised renditions of jazz standards, while she has also developed a taste for experimentation in the realms of neo-soul, R'n'B and spiritual music. She recently released her debut album, A Social Call, and will play a selection of material from this disc at what will be the concert of the Jazz Spring Festival. The album contains traces of both Horn's social sensibilities and her reactions to current events. She considers it important to respond to those challenges in today's world that demand that we take responsibility for our actions, and believes it is essential for each one of us to be fully aware of our role within the community. In addition to her authentic and consummate performance style, Horn also boasts outstanding technical qualities, is a superb scat singer and a genuine team player. She has the kind of star quality you would usually expect from a singer who has been performing for decades. As producer Larry Rosen has said, Jazzmeia Horn is the future of jazz.
