This year, we will celebrate International Jazz Day with a special anniversary show. Müpa Budapest is 15 years old, the Hungarian Jazz Federation is 30. In line with tradition, the band judged to be the best by this year's Jazz Showcase jury will perform in the Atrium at 5 pm, before at 6.15 pm one of Hungary's most distinctive and experienced drummers, István Baló, will present his show Birds and Stones alongside his band, Project. Finally, at 7.30 pm in the Festival Theatre, the public can encounter some of the 'heavyweights' of the Hungarian jazz scene in a never-seen-before formation. They will line up together as members of a big band.

István Baló formed his band - whose line-up varies from concert to concert - in the autumn of 2015, with the intention of playing free music 'built on fundamentals'. Their music features pre-written themes and defined points of arrival and departure, which are used to bring clarity to the wide range of musical forms and the vast array of musical tools used by the performers. The group's album Folyó a medrében (Flowing Wide) was released in 2018.
The Festival Theatre will host an ambitious and - we can safely say - unrepeatable production, as we enjoy a remarkable celebration of 30 years of the Hungarian Jazz Federation (HJF). Each musical instrument will be played by a music great who has been an essential part of the Hungarian jazz scene over the last few decades. The evening's musical director will be Béla Zsoldos, a HJF board member, while the show will feature some of the finest pieces from the history of jazz music. The concerts are free of charge. Pre-registration is required for the evening performance at the Festival Theatre.
