Esti Kornél is one of the most important bands on Hungary's alternative music scene. At Müpa Budapest, they will be putting aside their characteristic harder sound for the time being to play their best-known songs in a new musical style that accommodates a chamber chorus and cello, and maybe even a bit of theatre.

Founded in 2006 by high-school students from the town of Mezőtúr, the band already boasts four LP albums and numerous memorable appearances at clubs and festivals. They have accomplished all this while also forever burning into twenty-something minds such generational hits as Rohadt eső ("Rotten Rain”) and Boldogság, te kurva ("Happiness, You Whore”), despite the tender average age of its members, which is barely 25. As a result, the band's ever-expanding audience is itself growing more mature and discerning from year to year.
Esti Kornél's journey, which now brings it to Müpa Budapest with an all-new acoustic programme, is one into an unknown world that is at the same time deeply familiar. In ideal cases, musical expeditions like this always reveal in the end that the song itself is the important thing. Most important of all is what is concealed behind the song. Named after the adventurous protagonist from the novellas by Dezső Kosztolányi, Esti Kornél shares the character's openness toward the world, love of freedom and insistence on clinging to his values.
