It is a great honour that Bassekou Kouyate has accepted our request to hold a music workshop prior to the evening concert, providing the audience with an insight into the West African griot tradition directly from the master himself. We can also get to know the history of the instruments used by Kouyate's band, among them the ngoni family of instruments and the shekere (yabara) familiar almost throughout the African content. At the end of the programme, those interested can even try out the instruments, and discover what kinds of sound can be produced by the calabash or how to make the tamani or ‘talking drum' talk?

Our partner in producing this programme is the Ethnosound world music instrument shop.
