Like other panpipes, the Andean sikuri consists of a series of closed pipes of different lengths which produce different pitches of sound. These are made from a type of bamboo known as tacuara, and the closed end of the pipes are formed naturally from bumps in the bamboo. The pipes are held together by cross-linked strips cut from the same reed. The siku is made special by the fact that the entire diatonic scale is found in the two rows of pipes, which are traditionally played by two different musicians, though today the two rows are gradually brought together so that a single musician can play every note.
