The stars of this series are the ‘tools' of music: its instruments. Attending children will have the chance to familiarise themselves with these instruments under the guidance of expert musicians. In this half year, we will embark on a journey into the realm of the musical instruments of a classic symphony orchestra. Children who join our expedition will have the chance to learn about the orchestra and its most important instrument groups.

Woodwind instruments are essential components of the symphony orchestra. Sometimes they are heard in unison to reinforce the harmonies played by the string instruments, at other times they are given solo parts, equal in standing to string instruments. Woodwind instruments constitute the most diverse group in the symphony orchestra. The name is actually somewhat misleading, as some woodwind instruments, such as the flute and its little brother the piccolo, are now made of metal. The various types of flute also differ in other ways from orchestral woodwind instruments such as the clarinet, oboe and bassoon. The sounds of the latter group are caused by the vibration of one or two thin reeds located in the nozzle, while there are no nozzles in the flute and its relatives (such as the recorder). Instead, you blow onto a sharp edge that causes the instrument to vibrate.
