Perhaps the most famous manuscript in all of Hungarian literature is the bound and locked volume - dubbed by him (and by posterity as well) the ‘Clasped Book' - in which János Arany penned his poems during the twilight of his life.

With only a few exceptions, the poems committed to paper here were not published in their entirety during the poet's lifetime. However, this cycle subsequently turned out to be one of the most important works he ever produced, strongly influencing the later lyrical vernacular. This third lecture in Literarium Junior's spring series aims to present this manuscript, while also demonstrating how many important details can be discerned if we pay attention to the order of the poems and their interconnections, as well as to Arany's own corrections.
