It was as if he were in constant motion: Ferenc Liszt literally travelled a long way from his birthplace of Doborján (today the small Austrian town of Raiding) until his death in Bayreuth. He was not yet twenty years old before Vienna, Paris and London had already applauded the exceptionally talented pianist. He soon embarked on European concert tours, roaming the old continent from Portugal on its western edge to distant Russia. Liszt's map of Europe emerges from the musical dialogue between pianist Balázs Fülei and Szilveszter Szélpál.

When we say that someone is a world traveller today, we probably mean something completely different from what the word implied, say, a century ago, and even more so two hundred years ago. The distinctive figure of Ferenc Liszt, better known outside of Hungary as Franz Liszt, appears in our mind's eyes as an exception that proves the rule. The pianist, composer and conductor whose lifetime spanned most of the 19th century truly became a celebrated musician wherever he performed, regardless of national borders. It makes sense that he was closely connected to many different cities over the course of his lifetime, and we can also find abundant traces of his travels in the music he wrote, from Venice to Rome, Weimar, Paris and beyond. In the programme for this event titled Liszt and Europe, Balázs Fülei and Szilveszter Szélpál invite everyone on a musical journey aimed at making the audience feel as if they too are sitting by Liszt's side in the stage-coaches travelling the winding roads. Szélpál poses the questions we ourselves want to ask to the expert pianist Balázs Fülei, who naturally answers them not only with words, but also with Liszt's own music. The event seeks to achieve several goals at the same time, with music dissemination and education equal in importance to the actual concert experience.
