This workshop will provide a fun and practical taste of the multifaceted world of beatbox. Beatbox is rooted in hiphop and its antecedants in the American alternative music and rap scene of the 1980s. In that time, virtuosity was determined by one's ability to faithfully imitate sounds made by electronic instruments that were radically different from those of the human voice. Since then, these vocal techniques, which started out mainly resembling percussion instruments, have outgrown the confines of their pop music origins and have taken on a new life of their own as a new genre.

Even before that, in the late '70s, composer and vocal improvisationalist Trevor Wishart wrote two books - 'Book of Lost Voices' and, later, 'On Sonic Art', cataloguing every technique that the human vocal organs, with all their physiological and acoustic attributes, were capable of surpassing beyond the traditional methods of voice training. Wishart likens the vocal tract to a synthesiser, with which the various organs can create sounds resembling the way oscillators, filtres, modulators and resonators work. No matter how we approach it aesthetically, this is how we have reached the core concepts of modern beatbox. Anyone who had a hard time mastering music theory in school will always have a wealth of opportunities to become vocal virtuosos by other means. This is because the familiar sounds and colours of speech and singing only give a fraction of the possibilities needed to be a vocalist. You can try it out too! See how many nuances of a 'K' sound you can make, and then try shaping your lips into an 'E' sound or 'I' sound', all with a big smile on your face. These easily juxtaposed elements can readily be used in composing music or vocal recordings, not to mention their essential purpose of being a fun thing to do when amusing yourself and your friends while walking down the street.
