Violetta is celebrated like an uncrowned queen. Surrounding this woman of striking beauty, dazzling in all of her jewellery, is a seemingly permanent circle of men. These wealthy gentlemen are constantly bidding against each other in order to obtain the coveted treasure. Violetta enjoys this game and appears to be entertained by the chase. Does she know, though, what she is actually yearning for? Perhaps her captivating charm and pleasant and innately cultured personality fill her with a sense of satisfaction, for she plays the role of the enchantress happily. Happily? Indeed?

Her translucently pale face sometimes burns with fever, and she conceals her exhausting coughing fits by quickly withdrawing from company. During one of these cruel moments, an unfamiliar touch and gaze, helpful in their intent and childlike in their kindness begin to captivate the hunter. Alfred's proximity evokes the contours of Violetta's true face, to his own surprise as well. In an unexpected turn, he gives up his luxurious life and friends and moves to the countryside with his beloved in order to share romantic happiness. Just Violetta's illness limits the hours remaining in her life, Alfred's father puts an end to this idyllic contentment. His request falls on her shoulders like the burden of the harshest of judgements. The contents of her farewell letter do not reveal the truth behind her self-sacrifice. What could be the reason she sacrifices herself and her love? What drives her to nobly put the happiness of others before her own? The self-destructive process intensifies as the shadow of death grows ever blacker. The disease that had abated in the peace of the countryside resurges amidst the series of humiliations and her life of poverty. Steadfastly, she keeps the secret as she awaits, in the depths of her soul, the release that Alfred's embrace will bring. But it is only Death that embraces her, tighter and tighter.

The performance is recommended to persons over the age of 12.
