In founding the Dance Theatre of Harlem in 1969, Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook were inspired to offer new opportunities to the young people of the neighbourhood in which they grew up. Having already established his reputation as a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, Mitchell understood the power of classical dance training to bring focus and discipline to a challenged community.
Vessels depicts an adventurous travel experience. Chaconne, however, is a piece that they dedicate to the spirit of humanity. Dancing on the Front Porch of Heaven - Odes to Love and Loss relays the lessons of a tragic accident to the evocative music of Arvo Pärt and Benjamin Britten, while Return recalls Afro-American traditions by combining the elegance of classical ballet with the gritty drive of funk.
