In the past ten seasons of Met simulcasts, some 20 million music lovers have received the chance to enjoy productions being performed at one of the world's leading opera houses. The performances are now screened in 2000 venues in 70 countries on six continents. Verdi's early opera set in ancient Babylon had its world première 175 years ago and quickly won fame thanks to its many beautiful melodies. It is now being included in the Live in HD programme for the first time, conducted by James Levine in a spectacular production by Elijah Moshinsky.
What makes this production special is having world star Plácido Domingo sing the title role at the Met for the first time in his astonishingly long career. The Babylonian king's eldest daughter will be performed by Liudmila Monastyrska, who made her début at the Met in 2012, and showed her mettle in the bravura role of Abigaille in London alongside both Domingo and Leo Nucci in 2013. Taking the stage as Nabucco's other daughter will be Jamie Barton, the 2013 winner of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World contest, who also won the Met's competition in 2007. The audience will also hear American tenor Russell Thomas, veteran of more than ten years singing at the New York opera house, as Ismaele. Dimitry Belosselskiy, a regulator collaborator with renowned conductors who also partnered with Anna Netrebko in Milan for La Scala's opening performance for the 2015/16 season, made his highly successful Met début in 2011 in the same role he will be singing now.
