Here to conduct Verdi's 1853 masterpiece, which includes the classic Brindisi drinking song, will be Nicola Luisotti, music director of both the San Francisco Opera and the Neapolitan Teatro San Carlo, and an amazingly expert interpreter of the Italian repertoire. Celebrated in the role of the terminally ill courtesan, but also having sung several other doomed lovers (Gilda, Mimì, Desdemona) at the Metropolitan, the marvellous Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva will be making her first HD appearance in the programme's ten-year history. Her partner will be the American Michael Fabiano, who has won eight different prizes in his short but brilliant career. He made his début as Alfredo in 2007, and since then has portrayed the gripping role of Violetta's admirer at the Teatro di San Carlo, the Santa Fe Opera, as well as at the Glyndebourne Festival. Playing Alfredo's father will be the world-famous Thomas Hampson in one of his most brilliant portrayals at the Met.
The director of this revival is Willy Decker, who also created the memorable Salzburg production of the opera featuring Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón.
