The Budapest audience first got to hear the playing of the - even then - globetrotting piano virtuoso Mikhail Pletnev in 1987. "Pletnev knows everything about the piano and its sound. [...] He delights in his instrument, and most especially in the pieces that he played. This exilarated joy is no private affair, as he shares every moment with his listeners.”
The Russian artist will play two Mozart sonatas, composed in 1774 and 1783 respectively, in the company of Beethoven's final sonata. The concert will thus end with the two movements of the late 1822 C-minor sonata that played such a memorable role in Thomas Mann's late novel Doktor Faustus, a work brimming with musical commentaries. In it, the author puts deep insight into the words of the musician Wendell Kretzschmar, which will also be exemplified at Pletnev's concert: the second movement, called the Arietta, is Beethoven's final farewell to the genre of the sonata and its tradition form.
