With the establishment and liberation of the organ as a fixture of concert halls, we have got to know this queen of instruments in a new role. One highly successful series connected to the huge organ of the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, which has grown into a tradition keenly followed by the concert-going public, is the Organ Duel presenting the new generation of organists. These evenings are always exciting as they promise unpredictable moments and surprises aplenty.
On this occasion, two organists from Poland and Germany "battle it out” with each other. Born in 1992, Martin Sturm has been described by critics as dazzling audiences with breathtaking improvisations that delight with their natural and varied style, not only at prestigious competitions but in renowned concert venues. It is a mark of his versatility that he also conducts Baroque and contemporary works alike, while also working regularly with his jazz ensemble. Born in 1990, Karol Mossakowski studied at the Conservatoire de Paris under the guidance of Notre-Dame organist Olivier Latry, among others, while pursuing studies in improvisation in the class of the likewise world-famous Thierry Escaich. In 2013, he won the international organ competition held at the Prague Spring Festival, thanks to which he now plays concerts across Europe.
