The clue is in the name: Frédéric Champion is truly a champion of the organ. He is an artist whose playing - as the critics describe it - is characterised by freshness and strength, a diaphanous sound, subtle expressive power and rich invention, his bold interpretations infused with a burning passion. The French musician has taken first prize in a good number of major competitions, and now belongs among the company of artists sought and celebrated worldwide. Inviting the audience on an unusual musical adventure, this evening's programme opens with one of the last works by the highly influential César Franck, the large-scale, celebratory Chorale in E major, continuing with the lovely Three Dances by Maurice Duruflé, a composer largely known only in organist circles.
Champion routinely performs extraordinarily complex and spectacularly virtuosic compositions from memory, causing a sensation everywhere he goes in the world. He is also noted for creating his own transcriptions of well-known symphonic works, enriching their sound with tones never heard before. We will have the chance to hear some of these exciting undertakings at this concert, including Mussorgsky‘s famous evocation of the Witches' Sabbath, as well as another symphonic poem on a similar theme from the pen of the brilliant Russian composer's French contemporary Saint-Saëns. The organ version of a sumptuous movement from an orchestral work by Debussy also promises excitement, the only question being what tones the musician will choose from the almost inexhaustible possibilities of the Müpa instrument.
