With his annual orchestral piano recitals, Endre Hegedűs has practically invented a new 'genre'. The unique aspect of this performance is the fact that the artist's wife will be joining him for the first time on the Müpa Budapest stage to perform concertos for two pianos. This will also be his first time collaborating with the Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok in this concert hall. They will be playing masterpieces from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras. The first part of the concert will feature the married couple performing the only one of Johann Sebastian Bach's three concertos for two pianos (harpsichords) that was originally written for the instrument, the piece in C major. All three movements are characterised by an increasingly intense 'upward' progression. The concerto that Mozart wrote to play himself and with his sister radiates wit and joie de vivre, in spite of the fact that the year 1779 brought much disappointment in Mozart's life.
This excerpt from an earlier review should serve as an appetiser for the work to be played after the interval: 'At his first appearance with the Utah Symphony Orchestra, the artist débuted as the soloist in Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor. Hegedűs possesses technical skills of firecracker intensity, which seem capable of ripping apart the piano's keys. Instead, he - wisely - chose an elegant and extraordinarily lyrical approach for the highly renowned Norwegian's score. The diabolically difficult final movement found the pianist's fingers in their finest form. Hegedűs danced together with the music, practically sending his listener's souls spinning into dance as well. The audience acclaimed the performance with an enthusiastic standing ovation,' wrote the The Salt Lake Tribune. The husband-and-wife duo now promises the Budapest audience a similar experience.
