If concert-goers haven't seen the event's title, then they should still be able to guess that having a Slovak coloratura soprano, a Hungarian alto, a Czech tenor and a Polish bass all at one concert, together with a Slovak conductor and a Hungarian orchestra, can hardly mean anything other than a musical counterpart to the cooperation of the four countries of the Visegrad Group.
The compilers of the programme have also taken care to ensure that the "spirit of Visegrad” would be buttressed not just by the countries of origin of the participants, but by the works being played as well. Alongside the great classics by Mozart, Rossini, Bellini, Rachmaninoff, Mascagni and Puccini, the concert will feature works by composers from the four nations, with Erkel and Kodály representing Hungary and Smetana and Dvořák the Czechs, joined by the Polish Stanisław Moniuszko and Slovakia's Alexander Moyzes. The work by the latter composer (who lived from 1906 to 1984), Dances from Pohronie, is a genuine novelty from music history: in all likelihood the Hungarian audience will be hearing it for the first time. Conducting its fourth movement will be Peter Valentovič, Gruberova's regular collaborator, whom she holds in great esteem.
