"Tchaikovsky's concerto is a favourite repertoire piece for every violinist. We Hungarians feel particularly close to this masterpiece, as the composer dedicated it to our own Lipót (Leopold) Auer. I am no different in this respect, but another reason I am fond of this work is because I feel that it is very much my own, and I try to show my own conception and performance style in this popular piece that everybody knows. I also have a close relationship with Paganini's first violin concerto, as winning the Paganini Competition in Moscow was an important milestone in my career. Paganini's works have frequently appeared in my repertoire ever since, and I've also recorded this violin concerto that I'll be playing at the concert. For 190 years, audiences have adored these violin concertos in which Paganini places nearly inhuman demands on the performer, whereas critics have sniffed. Now appearing with Baráti for the first time, the Danubia Orchestra Óbuda has represented the youthful energy in Hungary's classical music scene ever since it was formed. Its innovative initiatives and its novel efforts aimed at musical education for youth make it stand out among the country's professional orchestras. Conducting it will be another winner of both the Kossuth Prize and the Liszt Award: János Kovács.
