This world-famous conductor familiar to Hungarian audiences has selected masterpieces that were all written in the 60-year period between 1775 and 1834 that nonetheless appear to represent completely different worlds. Sylvain Cambreling has served as musical director of renowned European and Japanese ensembles and operas for several decades and has served as conductor of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra since the beginning of the 2018-2019 season. The first piece on the programme is Mozat's colourful and imaginatively arranged overture in D major, which follows the fast-slow-fast structure of the old three-movement Italian opera overture. The longest and most dense section is the first, which takes the form of a sonata. This is followed by a three-part Andante reminiscent of a serenade, and finally an energetic and snappy rondo finale. We will then hear a bold orchestral piece from a young Beethoven still finding his way but with a style all of his own. Finally, Cambreling will conduct a work from Berlioz, one of the most significant French composers of the 19th century. This is a genuine romantic symphony that connects literature and music with boundless imagination. The piece, a viola concerto in disguise, was composed at the encouragement of Paganini principal violist of the Berlin Philharmonic, Máté Szűcs.
