It has been a Müpa tradition for years to welcome in the New Year with The Creation, Haydn's grandiose masterpiece proclaiming the world's diversity, the wonder of life in all its glory, the greatness of humanity and the perfection of the Creator, all expressed through the magical power of music. This composition crowning the life's work of the master of the Classical Viennese School has lost none of its popularity over the past 220 years - and the memory of its highly successful Hungarian première is even preserved in the name of a Budapest street (Alkotás utca).
We welcome a celebrated artist to the conductor's podium in the person of Adam Fischer, who as a musician entirely fluent in the Haydn idiom and as artistic director of the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra, has recorded all 104 of the composer's symphonies. The Kossuth Prize-winning conductor has performed at the Salzburg and Bayreuth festivals, and has directed the Wagner in Budapest Festival at Müpa from its inception. At this concert, he conducts the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, one of the finest ensembles performing on period instruments today, which celebrates the 30th anniversary of its foundation in 2016. Unusually, the British ensemble works not with one but with several principal conductors, one of these currently being Sir Simon Rattle, while Sir Roger Norrington is its emeritus conductor.
The Purcell Choir was founded more than 25 years ago and is a regular participant in the New Year's Concert. In recent years, together with its sister ensemble the Orfeo Orchestra, it has taken part in important early music productions in Hungary such as Purcell's The Fairy-Queen, Rameau's opera Platée and a performance of Mondonville's motets.
