A new Met production

The centrepiece of this Shakespearean drama, which has inspired at least 20 operatic treatments, is the electrically-charged pairing of Diana Damrau and Vittorio Grigolo. One of the most sought-after singers of our time, as well as one of the Met's divas, the German soprano is now portraying the young Capulet girl for the first time. Vittorio Grigolo, another world star, was only 13 years old when he partnered with Pavarotti at La Scale, making him the youngest male singer to ever take the stage in the not inconsiderable history of the Milan opera house.
This reading of Gounod's musical version of the classic story is that of a world-famous director. Bartlett Sher believes that the genre of opera buttresses the aspects of Shakespeare's plays that in a dramatic production might remain in the shadows - which is why this adaptation premièred by the French composer 150 years ago is so exciting. "Gounod elevates the transcendental power of love, with the plot defined by ecstatic duets,” says the multiple Tony Award-winning director.
Singing Mercutio will be Elliot Madore, returning to the stage of the Met after having embarked on a global career in recent years. In the role of Frère Laurent is one of the youngest of the great Russian basses, Mihail Petrenko. The Italian Gianandrea Noseda, on the other hand, is one of the busiest conductors around these days, and will soon be taking up the post of music director at Washington's National Symphony Orchestra.
