Concert-goers have already had the chance to experience the flourishing artistic collaboration between András Keller, Gidon Kremer, Concerto Budapest and Kremerata Baltica. Much of this concert programme focuses on significant but rarely heard works from the last century, with the familiar and popular (including as film music) Adagietto from Mahler's Fifth Symphony being joined by two compositions from the final quarter of the 20th century that are now considered classics. Alfred Schnittke originally intended to title his 1978 Violin Concerto No. 3 Canticum canticorum, meaning 'Song of Songs': the piece simultaneously draws from the traditions of Russian Orthodox church music and German Romanticism. Performing the work as soloist will be Gidon Kremer, one of the world's most authoritative interpreters of the piece. The combined ensemble of Concerto Budapest and Kremerata Baltica will conclude their concert with Mieczysław Weinberg's 21st Symphony. The composer, a Polish Jew, dedicated his 1991 work, whose opening Largo quotes both Chopin and Mahler, to the memory of the victims of the Warsaw ghetto.
