As part of the Rising Stars programme launched by the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO) in 1995, the concert halls that make up the organisation each year send out a new crop of talented young musicians and ensembles on a European concert tour that, for some years now, has given the Müpa Budapest audience the chance to get to know them.
Born in 1994, Edgar Moreau is the sort of artist we're certain to hear more and more about. He was 15 when he won the special prize for the most promising young soloist at the International Rostropovich Competition, and two years later finished in second place at Moscow's Tchaikovsky Competition. At 19, he signed an exclusive contract with a major recording label, with which he has released two albums so far. On the second one, he plays no fewer than five cello concertos with orchestral accompaniment. On the first, however, he creates virtuoso performances with the same pianist who will be heard at this concert, Pierre-Yves Hodique, who also accompanied him at the Tchaikovsky competition, where he won the special prize for best piano accompanist. They've appeared together regularly since then.
The two young musicians are choosing music from three different eras, demonstrating that they are equally comfortable in every style. After starting with Beethoven's variations on Pamina and Papageno's charming duet, they'll play a new work from popular contemporary French composer Eric Tanguy. Following that, the pair, now long accustomed to working with each other, will perform Rachmaninoff's Cello Sonata, a piece in which neither instrument predominates, and which might owe its meagre popularity to the fact that it was written in the same period as the composer's enormously successful Piano Concerto No. 2.
