The second instalment of the Moments of Eternity concert series has been given the title Cosmic Intimations as the pieces to be played are all nourished by profoundly personal emotions, while their messages at the same time approach the scale of the cosmic and the monumental. Richard Strauss's An Alpine Symphony is constructed around the relationship between man and nature, and explores dimensions never before seen in terms of both its musical content and the number of musicians required to play it. Bach's Chaconne is an entire universe locked into a solo violin. The question of whether it was actually written as a solo work has been debated for centuries, and numerous composers have tried to write the supposedly lost accompaniment to it. Leopold Stokowski's version stands out from among the various attempts: his monumental orchestral arrangement makes the universe of Bach's music understandable and emotionally relevant for people of the present day. Respighi's symphonic poem Pines of Rome expresses personal feelings behind the great historical moments and legends from times gone by in a series of towering musical tableaux. The piece will also be paired with a large-scale choreography.
