Two faces of Vienna, or, the metamorphosis of the symphony. This could well be a summary of this evening with Daniele Gatti and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, who will perform two youthful compositions by Schubert, as well as two pieces by the emblematic figure of Viennese modernism, Anton Webern.
Best known as an opera conductor, the Italian Daniele Gatti has a wide array of symphonic compositions in his impressive recording catalogue (such as the works of Tchaikovsky and Mahler), and can justly be considered one of today's outstanding concert conductors. As a matter of fact, Gatti has always given equal weight to his respective responsibilities in the opera house and the concert hall, being as ready to work at Covent Garden, the Met and the Vienna State Opera, as with the best symphony orchestras of Chicago, Cleveland, New York, Vienna and London.
Daniele Gatti succeeded Mariss Jansons as chief conductor of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2016. Formerly, he was musical director of the Orchestre National de France, principal conductor of the British Royal Philharmonic and the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, principal guest conductor of the Royal Opera House, London, music director of the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna, and chief conductor of the Zurich Opera.
