The Baroque concert of the Bridging Europe festival takes us across Polish lands, from lively, early Baroque melodies to uplifting choral compositions. In addition to the pieces little-known in Hungary, exciting works from the giant of the era, Johann Sebastian Bach, will also be performed.

Adam Jarzębski was an indispensable figure in the sparkling cultural life of 17th century Poland. While he was not an innovator, his early Baroque compositions are full of things to discover. The concert's artistic director, Eszter Lesták Bedő treated audiences at the orchestra's Sándor Végh Memorial Concert in 2017 to Bach's fateful Violin Concerto in D minor. The piece's original score was lost, and the composer later adapted the work as a concerto for harpsichord. We will now hear the reconstructed original piece interpreted by the violinist of the Budapest Festival Orchestra.
Choral pieces will be performed in the concert's second half. Marcin Józef Żebrowski composed his works at the famous pilgrimage site of the Jasna Góra monastary in the 18th century. While his pieces bear the hallmarks of the Baroque style, they also lean forward towards classicism. One of his pieces, the majestic Magnificat, will be performed in the concert. Grzegorz Gerwazy Gorczycki has been referred to as 'the Polish Handel'. He primarily wrote religious music, including the glorious motet In virtute tua. The concert's final piece will also be church music: Bach's Palm Sunday Cantata, composed in Leipzig in 1725.
