The coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of the performance of Beethoven's most massive work originally planned for March 2020, and the MÁV Symphony Orchestra has rescheduled it for a few weeks after the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth. Why is it that we love Beethoven so much? Could it be because his works are full of beautiful melodies and we discover in them an inexhaustible creative imagination. Or because his music, rather than being soothing, stirs us, making us feel like different people after hearing one of his works? Because we know of the suffering that filled his life and respect the strength with which he overcame his difficulties? Yes, for all of these reasons.

This concert will feature one of his final mammoth works: the Missa solemnis, which he composed a few years before his death. Although it was written to the text for the traditional Catholic mass, it is no piece of church music, and its dimensions also make it impossible to be performed as part of the church liturgy - just as Beethoven's own religious faith could not be compared to that of ordinary believers. His religion transcended denominations, and his God was the universe itself. For him, love meant embracing all of humanity. This idealism appears in his earlier works as well, but is fully developed here. There is no better way to recommend this work to listeners than with the words that Beethoven himself penned at the beginning of the score: 'From the heart - may it return to the heart!'
