He is generally agreed to have set an exceptionally high standard with his performances of Ludwig van Beethoven's works. He has performed cycles of the composer's complete piano sonatas on more than sixty occasions, all around the world. In 2021, Deutsche Grammophon celebrated the pianist's 75th birthday with Buchbinder: Beethoven, a collection of 32 sonatas and 5 piano concertos.
Mein Beethoven - Leben mit dem Meister, Buchbinder's 2014 book about his relationship to Beethoven was enthusiastically received. According to a review, it has all the appearance of ‘one giant paying homage to another in words and tones.'
