New events of 2024

The schedule of programmes we have on offer for next year has been expanded with new performances!

Taking the stage at Müpa Budapest one after the other will be a host of jazz legends and major figures from Hungary’s popular music scene, and we will once again be running the Budapest celebration for Wagner fans – after recently announcing visits by a number of Hungarian and international stars, we have now added even more concerts and performances by illustrious artists to our programme calendar. 

Guitar phenomenon Al Di Meola is coming with his musician friends, and Eliades Ochoa, who gained fame around the world through the Buena Vista Social Club, will also visit for a concert, while in April, the atmospheric rock musicians Platon Karataev will release their new album Napkötöző (Sunbound).

For cinephiles, we recommend our SILENT – FILM – MUSIC concert series combined with a film screening, where you can experience, in a 21st-century environment, what cinema was like in its early days. The Jazz Spring programme brings us Lakecia Benjamin, who combines elements of funk, R&B and hip-hop, and the multiple award-winning Canadian singer/songwriter/pianist Laila Biali, ending with a show by the Grammy-winning trumpeter Chris Botti. Jazz fans will also get to enjoy a concert by Dávid Lamm: known for his eclectic style, he is bringing his new album, Skidaddle. 

As winter draws to a close, the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble, chosen as the ensemble of the season, will bring us a production entitled Carnival Sunday, and with Easter approaching, the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble has the dance drama His Cross Blossomed in store to enchant folk fanatics, while the Grand Chinese New Year concert will take the curious to distant lands. 

For the first time, an Organ Duel concert will feature two legendary Hammond organists: John Medeski and Larry Goldings. Our chamber concert of pieces by composer of the season György Orbán and his students Tímea Dragony, Levente Gyöngyösi and Katalin Szalai promises to reveal new layers of the legendary musician’s oeuvre.

It has been more than a decade and a half since Müpa Budapest first presented elements from Richard Wagner’s opera cycle The Ring of the Nibelung together with conductor Ádám Fischer and the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir. In addition to the Ring, this year’s Wagner festival offers a Song recital by Bo Skovhus and two performances of Gods and Heroes, an orchestral concert comprised of the best-known excerpts from the German composer’s operas.
