Because the piano has 88 keys, the 88th day of the year is international Piano Day. Now in its sixth edition, we have been celebrating this wonderful instrument at the end of March since 2015. Following last year's successful series of events, Müpa Budapest will also be hosting this all-day programme in 2020. Of the afternoon programmes, the first concert by the pianist and singer Tom Adams is closest to pop music. Accompanying himself on piano and colouring his music with electronic effects, Adams is a classical pop singer-songwriter with a memorable falsetto voice.

Tom Adams started out playing the guitar and now raises his minimalist piano compositions to the level of contemporary chamber pop by occasionally crossing them with wind an other instruments, before finely layering ambient and electronic sounds on top and putting his falsetto at the heart of the songs. Hailing from Cambridge and now living in Berlin, he was previously known as Toma. He played dreamy, more guitar-centric post-rock in the bands Hollow Mountain and The Mountaineering Club, before turning his attention to the piano in his solo albums and becoming increasingly refined in realising his vision. His piano playing enters into a dialogue with ambient textures coaxed from a synthesizer and is always influenced by the given space - so it is no surprise he set up his own studio in an abandoned airport building and filled it with analogue and tape recording equipment. In addition to material from his three solo albums and two EPs released in his own name since 2014, this kind of improvisation is typical of his intimate, atmospheric and emotionally charged performances.
