The Yellowjackets have been performing on stage for some 30 years yet still play as if they were in their thirties – and not many bands can make such a claim. The story goes back to 1977, when Russell Ferrante on keyboards worked as backup musicians in Robben Ford’s studio band. The drummer at the time was Ricky Lawson, who was replaced by William Kennedy in 1987. The latter was responsible for providing the R’n'B and jazz rhythms the band adopted, and although he then spent quite some time away, he rejoined the group for the making of the album Timeline in celebration of their 30th anniversary. Even Bob Mintzer, the last to join the band, has been part of the foursome for close on 20 years. The unrivalled big band arranger, and player of the bass clarinet, EWI, tenor and soprano saxophone, has created many a classic Yellowjackets composition – not to mention his hugely memorable solo performances. The secret to the Yellowjackets’ success is that they form a coherent community of musicians who share similar musical tastes and philosophical outlooks. They also place great emphasis on achieving the highest standards of artistic creativity while continuing to entertain their audience. As to why they became the Yellowjackets, a type of North American wasp, Russell Ferrante claims they simply wished to convey the energy and joie de vivre of their music, the kind of music that has genuine punch.
