The Budapest Jazz Club's in-house big band enlists some of Hungary's best musicians under the directorship of trumpeter Dávid Csizmadia. Their repertoire features some of the most famous songs written specifically for big band, and as you'll hear on this evening, they also seek to play compositions that are little known or rarely performed in Hungary. Their concerts also feature soloists who have not performed with big band accompaniment in Hungary before. Young as the band is, they boast a unique musical character marked by a broad dynamic range, virtuosity, and an authentic sound. They have collaborated with such soloists as Ryan Quigley, Andrea Malek, Myrtill Micheller, and Béla Szakcsi Lakatos.
This list of renowned soloists will now be expanded to include multi-instrumentalist Gunhild Carling. The Swedish musician plays trumpet and trombone with the same ease as she does the bagpipes, recorder and harp. All of these musical talents are often packed into a single song, which she sometimes supplements by singing or tap dancing. With her own big band, Carling has appeared several times at celebrations at the Swedish Royal Palace, including Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf's 70th birthday celebration. She is most known, however, from her 'one woman band' guest appearances in Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox, where she performs swing-style adaptations of the pop hits of recent decades.
