This joint concert by Latcho Drom and Parno Graszt intertwines the two major strands of European Gypsy music: French manouche jazz and the Eastern European Vlach Gypsy tradition. Christophe Lartilleux, the founder of Latcho Drom, grew up in a travelling circus before - inspired by Django Reinhardt - starting a band in 1993. In addition to several of their own albums, the ensemble has also appeared with the Hungarian bands Etno Rom and Parno Graszt on a joint disc entitled Paris Budapest Caravane.
The Nyírség region's Parno Graszt (which means "white horse” in Romany) had already been playing for 15 years when their 2002 début album made it to number seven on European radio's world music charts. After that, they embarked on a series of tours both in Hungary and abroad, dazzling not only Central and Western Europe, India and the USA, but also the audience at the WOMEX world music expo in Copenhagen. Their albums, Hit the Piano, I go my Way, This World is Made for Me and Don't Stop Till the Break of Dawn, are consistently characterised by a natural performance style full of freshness, lightness and astonishing energy. In 2016, the white horse "galloped” to the Hungarian finals of the Eurovision Song Festival, enchanting a sizeable army of pop fans. When they play here with Latcho Drom, there can be no doubt the caravan will soar...
