In Hungary, dance house (táncház) was the most influential version of the folk music revival movement that swept the world in the 1970s, which is why it is difficult to imagine A Celebration of Folk Music without it. During this evening you can put on your dancing shoes for two sets of one-hour shows, first with music from the southern Slavic Babra group, then Erdőfű from the Carpathian Basin.
In addition to Babra's love of Balkan music, the band also has family ties to southern Slavic culture. Their characteristic style is created from the harmony of tamburas, harmonicas and a double bass alongside ancient polyphonic (or overtone) singing. The flickering tradition of the latter is inflamed during the group's popular concerts and in dance houses, while they have enjoyed international acclaim ever since their debut album.
The Erdőfű band was founded by some well-known figures from the Hungarian folk music scene to give a comprehensive picture of the diversity and idiosyncrasies of string folk music in the Carpathian Basin. Their instruments - the violin, viola, double bass, cello, gardon, harmonica and flutes - produce an incredibly diverse range of sounds that combine with the vocals of Melinda Balogh to create a dance that warms the spirit.
