Sándor Kányádi, who passed away in 2018 at the age of 89, needs no introduction. He is one of the most popular poets in the Hungarian language, while his significance and art extend far beyond the various contrasting literary camps or movements, spanning both the generations and national borders.

Kányádi was a compelling personality. One who bore witness to great times. He was a living legend, yet the epitome of that which is only natural. A magical storyteller, and a spirited treasure chest of anecdotes. Anyone who heard him recite a poem or simply tell a story - especially once he really got into his stride - was for a time barely able to shake the impact of the experience. While we cannot bring forth his personal presence directly, we can cite his rich, multifaceted poetry. Through the magic of his verse in Müpa Budapest's Glass Hall, we can together hum along with the unforgettable lines of his great cycle that began in the 1980s: "There are lands / where song / has lost its allure / and even despite the presence of life / you would believe / that all are in mourning // yet in protected / places can song be found / somewhere profound / slumbers the spirit / at the most guarded / delicate cusp // there are lands / where the folk / the branches are silent / living through gestures / afraid to speak / waiting for the storm.” Ever since, Sándor Kányádi's now-classic oeuvre has advocated for human liberty and dignity against the dictators of history through the authentic tools of poetry. His work has survived the ravages of time. Anyone who wishes to experience Kányádi's power in person can surely anticipate a stirring experience at Müpa Budapest.
